Annotation
Have you ever wondered why ducks don't get wet? They dip and dive, but they stay dry because they spread oil over their feathers to make them waterproof. The reader can learn more as they read and get to know different kinds of ducks.

ELA Content Standards
Key Ideas and Details- Grade 1
Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.

How it Connects: Students can discuss what they learned about ducks, and retell key facts from the story.

Craft and Structure- Grade 2
Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.

How it Connects: Students can discuss what the author was trying to tell the reader through the text, and talk about how the author wanted to inform the reader about different types of ducks.

Classroom Usage
Centers: Students can split up into four groups (more or less depending on class size) and draw/write facts on a poster board about a duck they learned about in the story.

Differentiation
This book would be good for ELL because it gives them a variety of vocabulary, that would help them work on their comprehension. The story will also teach them facts about ducks that they might not have known.
